සිවුමංසල කොලූ ගැටයා හේතුවාදීන්ගේ විමර්ශනයට ලක් වෙයි.

මගේ අලූත්ම පොත කාල බෝම්බ ඕනෑකර තිබේ! නිමිත්ත කර ගෙන ශ‍්‍රී ලංකා හේතුවාදීන්ගෙ සංගමය 2014 ඔක්තෝබර් 23 දා සංවාද මණ්ඩපයක් කොළඹ එන්. එම්. පෙරේරා කේන්ද්‍රයේ දී පැවැත්වූවා.

2011 මුල සිට මා රාවය පුවත්පතට ලියන සිවුමංසල කොලූ ගැටයා තීරු ලිපියේ හේතුවාදී දැක්මක් තිබෙනවා. මා එම හේතුවාදීන්ගෙ සංගමයේ සාමාජිකයකු නොවූවත් ඔවුන්ගේ තර්කානුකූල හා විචාරශීලි ප‍්‍රවේශය මට ද සමීපයි. ඇත්තටම මා තීරු ලිපිය ලියන්නේ හේතුවාදීන් නොවන බහුතරයක් ලාංකිකයන්ගේ මනැස ටිකක් හෝ විවෘත කිරීමේ අරමුණින්.

හේතුවාදීන්ගෙ සංගමයේ වත්මන් සභාපති සූරපාල රණතුංග මහතාත්, ලේකම් තාරක වරාපිටිය මහතාත් මූලික හැඳින්වීමක් කළ පසු හේතුවාදී ක‍්‍රියාකාරිකයන් හා ලේඛකයන් වන ගාමිණි වියන්ගොඩ හා එස්. එම්. බන්දුසීල දෙදෙනා මගේ පොත හා තීරු ලිපි ගැන අදහස් දැක්වූවා. එයින් සාරාංශයක් මෙන්න.

ප‍්‍රවීණ ලේඛක හා දේශපාලන විචාරක ගාමිණී වියන්ගොඩ මහතා:

මෙය සෑම හේතුවාදියකුම කියවිය යුතු පොතක්. අපේ හේතුවාදීන්ගේ කථාබහවල හා සංවාදවල යම් සීමිත බවක් තිබෙනවා. ආගම්, ඇදහිලි හා විශ්වාස වෙත වැඩි අවධානයක් අප යොමු කරනවා. එහෙත් හේතුවාදීන් ලෙස එවැනි දාර්ශනික සාකච්ඡාවලට පමණක් සීමා නොවී, එයින් ඔබ්බට ද අප සමාජය විග‍්‍රහ කළ යුතුයි. තව කථාබහ කළ යුතු හා විචාරශීලීව බැලිය යුතු බොහෝ දේ තිබෙනවා.

එවැනි පරාසයකට බැල්ම හෙලන මේ පොතට හේතුවාදීන්ගේ වපසරිය පුළුල් කළ හැකියි. මේ පොතේ විවිධාකාර විෂයයන් ගැන හා ලක් සමාජයේ විවිධ හරස්කඩවලට පැතිරුණු ලිපි අඩංගුයි.

ඒ හැම ලිපියක් පිටුපසම දිව යන හුය ලෙස මා දකින්නේ විවෘතභාවය හා විචාරශීලීත්වයයි. ඒ තමයි මේ ලිපි එකට ගැට ගසන පොදු සාධකය.

ලක් සමාජයේ චින්තනයේ සීමා හා පටු බව අතික‍්‍රමණය කරන්න, මේ ලිපි හරහා අපට මග පෙන්වීමක් කරනවා. ඒ ඔස්සේ යොමු විය හැකි නම් ආගම් අරභයාත්, ලෞකික ජීවිතය අරභයාත් අප වඩාත් තර්කානුකූල සමාජයක් බවට පත් වේවි.

මෙසේ වීම ශ‍්‍රී ලංකාවට හදිසි අවශ්‍යතාවයක්. අද අපේ රටේ රාජ්‍ය පාලනයට ජ්‍යොතිෂයජ්‍යොතිෂ සෘජුවම බලපෑම් කරනවා. එයට හේතුව රාජ්‍ය නායකයා මේවා දැඩි ලෙස විශ්වාස කරන්නකු වීම නිසා. එපමණක් නොවෙයි, පාලක හා විරුද්ධ පක්‍ෂ සියල්ලේම පාහේ සිටින බොහෝ නායකයෝ හා අපේ ඡන්දයෙන් පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට යන ජනතා නියෝජිතයෝ ජ්‍යොතිෂයට අනුව තමයි රටේ තීරණාත්මක පියවර හා ප‍්‍රතිපත්ති නිර්ණය කරන්නේ.

අපේ මැතිවරණ පවත්වන්නේ පාලකයාගේ කේන්දරයට වඩාත්ම සුබදායි යයි කියන දිනයක මිස වෙනත් කිසිදු සාධකයක් සළකා බලා නොවෙයි. මේ නිසා පාලකයන්ටත් වඩා ඉහලින් බලපෑම් කිරීමේ හැකියාව සමහර ජ්‍යොතිෂකාරයන්ට අද ලැබී තිබෙනවා.

අද අපේ රටේ බොහෝ දෙනකු නොදන්නා හෝ නූගත් හෝ උදවිය නොවෙයි. ආගම් ඇදහීමේදීත්, ජ්‍යොතිෂය ඇතුලූ ගුප්ත විද්‍යා දැඩි ලෙස විශ්වාස කිරිමේදීත් ඔවුන් තම දැන උගත්කම පසෙක තබා ඔහේ කි‍්‍රයා කරනවා.

මා මෙය දකින්නේ මොළය වෙහෙසවීමට ඇති අලසකම ලෙසයි. මොළය වෙහෙසා තර්කානුකූලව හා බුද්ධිගෝචරව යථාර්ථය විග‍්‍රහ කරනවාට වඩා ඉතා ලෙහෙසිනේ මොළය නිද්‍රාශීලීව තබා ගෙන තමන්ගේ වැදගත්ම තීරණ ආගමට හෝ ජ්‍යොතිෂයට හෝ ඒ දෙකටම භාර දීම.

එසේ මොළය නිද්‍රාශීලීවීමට ඉඩ නොදී, අලස නොවී ස්වාධීනව සිතන ටික දෙනකු නිසා තමයි ලෝකය ඉදිරියට යන්නේ. විද්‍යාව හා ශාස්ත‍්‍ර දියුණු වන්නේත්, ශිෂ්ටාචාරය වර්ධනය වන්නේත් එබන්දන්ගේ පිහිටෙන්. අපට තව තවත් අවශ්‍ය මේ අවධි වූ සිහියෙන් සිටින අයයි.

මොළය අලසව නිද්‍රාශීලීව සිටින උදවිය අවධි කිරීමේ ලොකු වගකීමක් අපට තිබෙනවා. සමාජය විවෘත හා විචාරශීලී කිරිමට මග පෙන්වීම තමයි හේතුවාදීන්ගේ සැබෑ කාර්ය භාරය. හේතුවාදීව සිතිය හැකි දේශපාලනික නොවන කාරණා ඕනෑ තරම් තිබෙනවා. හේතුවාදීන් පුළුල් පරාසයකට යොමු කරන්නට නාලකගේ සිවුමංසල කොලූ ගැටයා තීරු ලිපිය හා පොත් මහත් සේ උපකාර වනවා.

ප‍්‍රවීණ විද්‍යා පරිවර්තක හා හේතුවාදී ක‍්‍රියාකාරික එස්. එම්. බන්දුසීල මහතා:

ප‍්‍රධාන ධාරාවේ මාධ්‍යවල හා සභාවල බොහෝ විට කථා නොවන දේ නාලක නිතර ඔහුගේ තීරු ලිපියට මාතෘකා කර ගන්නවා. හැම දෙයක් කෙරෙහිම විචාරශීලීව බලන්නට හා ප‍්‍රශ්න කරන්නට ඔහුට හැකියාවක් තිබෙනවා. ඔහුගේ ලිපි කියැවීමෙන් අපේ රටේ බහුලව පැතිර ඇති ළිං මැඩි මානසිකත්වයෙන් අත්මිදිය හැකියි.

සිවුමංසල කොලූ ගැටයා තීරු ලිපිවල මා දකින තවත් වැදගත් ගුණාංගයක් නම් ලේඛකයා කිසිදු මතයක් හෝ විග‍්‍රහයක් හෝ සඳහා අනවශ්‍ය ලෙස පෙනී නොසිටිම. මෙය අපේ මාධ්‍යවල දුර්ලභයි. බොහෝ අය තැත් කරන්නේ තමන් කියන දේ පමණක් නිවැරදි යයි ඒත්තු ගන්වන්න. එහෙත් නාලක කරන්නේ අපට හිතන්නට ඇති තරම් කරුණු හා මානයන් සපයා දී අපේ විග‍්‍රහයන් අපටම කළ හැකි තැනකට අප කැඳවා ගෙන යාමයි.

එසේම විද්‍යා, කලා, මාධ්‍ය හැම ක්‍ෂෙත‍්‍රයකටම පැතිර පවතින අධිපතිවාදී මතවලට ඔහු නිතර අභියෝග කරනවා. එසේ කරන්නේ සියුම්ව හා ආචාරශීලීව ප‍්‍රතිතර්ක ගොනු කිරීමෙන්.

Science writer Nalaka Gunawardene won the Vidyodaya Literary Award for the best newspaper column in Sinhala during 2012.

The award is one of several presented annually by the University of Sri Jayawardenapura to celebrate creative writing and journalism in Sri Lanka. Each September, the University’s faculty members and students announce their selection of the preceding year’s most outstanding published books in the Sinhala language.

The award ceremony, held on 2 September 2013 at the National Library Services Board auditorium in Colombo, recognized the best Sinhala novel, best short story collection, best poetry collection, best lyrics collection and the best newspaper column of 2012.

Nalaka won the award for his Sinhala language column titled Sivu Mansala Kolu Getaya (සිවුමංසල කොලූ ගැටයා), which he has been writing on a weekly basis in the Ravaya Sunday broadsheet newspaper since early 2011. A collection of 44 selected columns was published in September 2012 as a book by the same name. It was a Ravaya Publication.

The award citation, read by Professor Dammika Ganganath Dissanayeke, Head of the Department of Sinhala and Mass communication at the University, described Sivu Mansala Kolu Getaya as being in a league of its own, engaging twenty first century Lankans.

It noted the broad range of the column’s topics and subjects – such as information society, innovation, climate change, disaster management, HIV/AIDs, energy crisis and censorship – and commended the colloquial language in which it is written.

Copies of the book, priced at Rs 450, are still available from all leading bookstores. The second book of columns, also a Ravaya Publication, will be released later this month during Colombo International Book Fair.

As a bilingual writer, Nalaka Gunawardene also writes a weekly English column (When Worlds Collide) in Ceylon Today every Sunday.

I just received a totally unexpected award from an unlikely source. Vidyodaya Literary Award for best newspaper column in Sinhala during 2012.

My award, for the best newspaper column collection of 2012, is for Sivu Mansala Kolu Getaya (සිවුමංසල කොලූ ගැටයා), which came out in September 2012.

A Ravaya Publication, the book comprises a selection of my weekly Sinhala columns by the same name, contributed to the Ravaya Sunday broadsheet newspaper during 2011-12.

Beginning in February 2011, I have sustained the weekly column that touches on many and varied topics related to popular science, human development, mass media and information society. The book compiled 44 of these columns.

The citation noted the broad range of the column’s topics and subjects – such as information society, innovation, climate change, disaster management, HIV/AIDs, energy crisis and censorship – and commended the colloquial language in which it is written.

My last awards were nearly two decades ago (and all for my English writing). These days, I’m much more involved in judging and giving awards to others – ranging from global Digital Emmys to national integrity awards.

The columns and the book are a personalised exploration of how Sri Lanka can cope with many challenges of globalisation and modernisation. Or, if you like more lofty words (ugh!), how a low middle income nation of 20 million can define its identity in turbulent times of rapid change.

The title is of my column puzzles some readers. It’s derived from the angle it offers, and a reflection of my own career and interests: I stand at the intersection (or confluence) of science, sustainable development, media and popular culture. From there, I often play the role of that cheeky lad who asked difficult questions, and once pointed out the Emperor(s) had nothing on when all others were either too polite — or too scared — to say so.

I write in conversational Sinhala mostly because that’s the only command of the language I can muster! Having studied the language only in primary and secondary school, I have no particular literary skill and certainly no artistic pretensions. I just write to express, not impress.

It looks as if others appreciate this simplicity. I use plenty of metaphor and analogy, and also draw on my own wide experiences as a journalist, filmmaker and development communicator.

I like to ‘zoom in’ and ‘zoom out’ when discussing diverse topics. I do so with an open mind and sense of wonder. I have no political ideology to promote — and also no sacred cows to protect or defend!

As a journalist, I was trained to look for what’s New, True and Interesting (‘NTI Test’). Early on in my career, I went beyond simply reporting events, and probed the underlying causes and processes. With those insights, I can now offer my readers perspectives and seasoned opinion. These are much needed today as we swim through massive volumes of information, trying to stay afloat and make sense of it all.

As I said when the book was launched: “In a sense, with this column I have come back home. The last time I wrote in Sinhala was in another century, and in what now feels like another country!”

So it’s nice to be recognized — in the very different land and time where I find myself both a native and an immigrant…

ආතර් සී. ක්ලාක්, රේ විජේවර්ධන, සිරිල් පොන්නම්පෙරුම හා ඔස්මන්ඞ් ජයරත්න වැනි විද්වතුන් සමඟ සමීපව කටයුතු කළ නාලක, එ අත්දැකීම් කාලානුරූපව හා සරල බස් වහරකින් ඉදිරිපත් කරයි.

ශ‍්‍රී ලාංකික ජන සමාජයේ “හැත්තෑ හතේ දරුවන්” ගැන විශේෂ අවධානයක් යොමු කරන ලේඛකයා, ඔවුන් මෙරට පළමුවන “ටෙලිවිෂන් පරම්පරාව” හා මුල් ම “ඉන්ටර්නෙට් පරම්පරාව” බවට පත් වන සැටි ගැන කලෙක සිට අදහස් පළ කරන්නෙකි.

පුවත්පත්, සඟරා, රේඩියෝ, ටෙලිවිෂන් හා ඉන්ටර්නෙට් යන සියළු මාධ්‍ය හරහා ද්විභාෂිකව සන්නිවේදනය කොට ඇති ඔහු, ගෝලීය තොරතුරු සමාජයේ ලාංකික ලකුණ කෙසේ ස්ථාපිත කළ යුතු දැයි මේ කෘතියේ ලිපි හරහා සාකච්ඡා කරයි.

රාවය ප‍්‍රකාශනයක් වන “සිවුමසල කොලූගැටයා” මිළ රු. 450කි. එය විශේෂ වට්ටමකට පොත් ප‍්‍රදර්ශනයේදී ලබා ගත හැකි ය.

Science writer Nalaka Gunawardene’s new Sinhala book, Sivu Mansala Kolu Getaya (සිවුමංසල කොලූ ගැටයා), is being launched at the Colombo International Book Fair that runs from 18 to 26 September 2012.

A Ravaya Publication, the book is an edited collection of his weekly Sinhala columns by the same name, contributed to the Ravaya Sunday broadsheet newspaper in Sri Lanka during 2011.

Beginning in February 2011, Nalaka has sustained a column that touches on many and varied topics related to popular science, human development, mass media and information society. The book compiles 44 of these columns.

“The title is of my column is derived from its particular scope and angle. I stand at the intersection (or confluence) of science, development, media and culture. Once there, I often play the role of that cheeky lad who asked difficult questions, and once pointed out the Emperor(s) had nothing on when all others were either too polite or too scared to say so,” Nalaka says.

He calls the book a personalised exploration of how Sri Lanka can cope with many challenges of globalisation and modernisation. He often mixes the big picture level analysis (bird’s eye view) with ground level reality checks (toad’s eye view).

“I like to ‘zoom in’ and ‘zoom out’ when discussing topics as diverse as coping with HIV/AIDS, nurturing innovation, regulating the Internet, tackling climate change or farming without costing the Earth,” he says. “I do so with an open mind and sense of wonder. I have no particular ideology to promote and no sacred cows to protect!”

The book marks Nalaka’s return to Sinhala writing after an absence of two decades during which he communicated mostly in English to various international audiences. “In a sense, with this column I have come back home. The last time I wrote in Sinhala was in another century, and in what now feels like another country!” he says.

Trained as a science writer, Nalaka has been associated with mass media, communication and development spheres for 25 years both in Sri Lanka and at Asian regional level. A ‘Digital Immigrant’ who learnt Internet skills mid-career, he calls himself a “life-long student and experimenter” in mainstream and new media.
